175th Anniversary 1841-2016
The year 1841 was notable for a number of events. In that year the British occupied Hong Kong; the first reference to Groundhog Day was made by the American James Morris in his diary; the Act of Union was proclaimed in Canada, merging the two colonies of The Canadas into the United Province of Canada; an emigrant ship, “The Governor Fenner”, on its way to the U. S. A., foundered off Holyhead drowning all 123 passengers; El Salvador proclaimed itself an independent republic; New Zealand became a British colony; the Russian colony of Guria revolted against the Empire; the first census in the United Kingdom was held; the Society of Jesus founded Saint John’s College (now Fordham University) in The Bronx ...
